Attendance
at the 'Threading the Needle: the Future of Fashion Design" conference
is absolutely Free. Yes, that is right: Free! All you need is a
computer powerful enough to run the software (see technical
requirements), Internet access, and two accounts, one on ScienceSim.com
and a Skype account. Both are also free. We want to make the
conference as useful to the emerging generation of fashion designers as
we can.
Who is eligible? Any fashion design student or any recent graduate from
any fashion program around the world. The event is being presented in
English, which is the only limiting factor.
To attend the conference, you will need two accounts: A Skype account and a ScienceSim account, both free.
Please create a Skype account at skype.com. Download the Skype software and install it, and make sure you save your user information. You'll need it to register for the conference.
Then, please visit ScienceSim.com and create an account . You'll need to download a piece of software called a 'viewer'. We recommend the Hippo OpenSim viewer. When you have downloaded the Hippo viewer, please make the following changes:
An alternative to the standard client is to install the Hippo OpenSim Viewer.
When you start the Hippo viewer, click on the “Grids” button to select
one of the grids. The first time you run Hippo, you will need to click
on the “Grids” button. Click on the “Add” button at the top, enter the URLhttp://grid.sciencesim.com/ in the Login URI
field, then click on the “Get Grid Info” button to fill in the details.
If you will be using Hippo exclusively to access the ScienceSim grid,
then make sciencesim the default.
Once you've done all of that, then log-in. Take a few minutes to
become accustomed to the interface, and a few minutes to customize your
avatar as fashionably as you care to! Feel free to join us at our orientation sessions;
we have the basic 'learn about the interface' orientation sessions, and
we also provide 'customize your avatar more fashionably' sessions.
Pick one or all and join us at the Fashion Research Institute's virtual
campus on ScienceSim.
While all of this only takes about 15 minutes if you are familiar with
virtual worlds, it's a good idea not to wait until the last minute.
Lots of people will be logging into the conference from around the
world, and we want to be able to help you if you have issues. We won't
be able to do that the day of the conference, so please plain ahead so
you can hear the great speakers we have lined up for you.
